Rhathymia; “carefree behavior; lightheartedness.”  Sometimes, life is hard.  What works for me at those times is to keep perspective and not take life too seriously.  Most situations are fixable, the others help us learn and grow.  This too shall pass.  While you are waiting for things to pass or working on the fix, have a great glass of white wine, take some time to enjoy it, and lift your spirits.

Pairs well with pate, lighter roast meats (chicken or pork), fish and shellfish, creamy sauces, spicy flavors, many Vietnamese and Thai dishes, and a vast array of hard and soft cheeses.

100% Roussanne sourced from the Sugarloaf Vineyard within Washington’s Rattlesnake Hills AVA.  It is produced and aged in a stainless steel tank, providing a clean varietal nature with additional complexity.

2021 RHATHYMIA is a crisp and bright white wine with a nice acid backbone.  Aromas of lemon, brioche, flowers such as honeysuckle and jasmine, and a hint of eucalyptus.  It has flavors of (Myer) lemon, lychee, kiwi, and tart apples.  For me, this wine is like going to downtown Seattle.  I live in the suburbs and I don’t go to Seattle all very often.  When I do, I always think “this is awesome, I should do this more often.”  Being a red wine guy, I don’t drink whites all that often.  When I drink this one, I think “…beautiful, complex, bright, lively, and layered…I ought to drink this more often.”

2022 RHATHYMIA is a medium straw colored, medium bodies, crisp, and bright white wine with a nice acid backbone.  Aromas and flavors of lemon-line, pineapple, green apple, and pear with a nice long finish.

QUOTIDIAN – “of or occurring every day.” – Most of life doesn’t make the highlight reel.  Rather, it is about showing up and doing what needs to be done, day after day, with little fanfare.  It seems to me that happiness comes from finding the beauty in daily life.  Truly enjoying the 99% of life that happens between the major life events and epic vacations.  I hope you enjoy this wine today and every day.

When pairing foods with Viognier, respect its delicate floral notes and medium acidity. As a rule, focus on expanding the wine’s core flavors while ensuring the foods you pair with it aren’t too acidic or bold.  Good examples include: roasted chicken chicken curry, quail, pork chops, fondue, gruyere, orange and lemon zest, butternut squarsh, pumpkin, leeks and onions.

The 2023 QUOTIDIAN is our first foray into Viogner, one of my favorite white varietals.  It is 100% Viogner from the Royal Slope AVA.  It is produced and aged in stainless steel tank, providing a clean varietal nature with additional complexity.

I remember looking at a wine list at a nice restaurant on the Washington coast and wanting to try something other than Chardonnay.  So, I gave Viogner a try.  It opened a whole new world for me and I remember thinking…”what is this elixir of which I have not heard…Viogner!” (or something like that).  This Viogner has a nose of tangerine, peach, and honeysuckle.  On the palette, it has notes of tangerine, peach, and mango.  It is full, fresh, and bright whether you are a seasoned Viogner pro or a newbee.

RISIBILITY; “the ability or disposition to laugh; humorous awareness of the ridiculous and absurd” is a great thing and essential to a well lived life because, as John Prine used to sing, “It’s a big old goofy world.”  Why not treat yourself?  Pour a glass of rose and listen to a favorite song that you haven’t heard in a while.

Pairs well with grilled summer meats, heartier salads, salmon, fish, tapas, spicy (Asian) dishes, back porches, and relaxed afternoons.

This RISIBILITY is 100% Mourvedre from the Sugarloaf Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.  It is a beautiful salmon colored rose wine with medium body, medium acid, and a nose and palate of red fruit, strawberries, fruit punch, pomegranate, and cantaloupe.  And, as always, it has a bit of that edgy, Mourvedre funk.

Purple Cellars – 92 points – 100% Mourvedre.  A pretty deep pink and copper in the glass.  Aromas of grapefruit and lemon zest with hints of grass.  The palate is focused, with a burst of juicy ruby grapefruit and lemon, and mint.  Mouthfeel is pleasant, soft and smooth, with balanced rounded acidity.  Surprising notes of pine nut emerges with mildly drying tannins lingering on the finish.  A rose with some nice complexity.  Should pair well with a nutty cheese. e.g. Gruyere.  Worked amazingly well with a very simple salmon!

Sam I. Am – Say! I like this! I do! I like it!
And I would drink it in a boat.  And I would drink it with a goat…
And I will drink it, in the rain. And in the dark. And on a train.
And in a car. And in a tree.  It is so good, so good, you see!
So I will drink it in a box. And I will drink it with a fox.
And I will drink it in a house. And I will drink it with a mouse.
And I will drink it here and there. Say! I will drink it anywhere!

This RISIBILITY is made the same as prior vintages, 100% Mourvedre from the Sugarloaf Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.  It was whole cluster, direct press, and vinified in stainless steel.

It is a bit more delicate and nuanced than past vintages.  You can see this straight away from how the pale pink color shimmers in the glass.  It has a delicate nose of juicy pink grapefruit and floral aromas.  It leads with notes of grapefruit, strawberry, and passion fruit on the front palette and finishes with slightly savory, herbal and fennel notes on the back palette and, maybe, just a hint of orange creamsicle.  It smells, tastes, and feels like a seaside breeze wafting over Provencal flower garden.

ad MELIORA is Latin for “towards better things”.  Hope for a better future and the hard work to create that future have been important for me throughout my life.  While enjoying this wine, share your hopes for a better future with someone.

Pairs well with any type of meat, grilled, roasted, braised, or stewed.  A great accompaniment to tapas or Palella as well as a wide variety of hard and soft cheeses.  It has a nice acidity which will pair well with foods and sauces that are a bit richer.

MELIORA is a Rhone style blend (40%  Mourvedre, 26% Cinsault, 15% Counoise, 15% Syrah, and 4% Grenache) blend sourced from the Elephant Mountain and Sugarloaf Vineyards within Washington’s Rattlesnake Hills AVA as well as the Willow Run vineyard in Washington’s Columbia Valley.

MELIORA is a medium bodied Rhone style red blend, perfect for summer days, lighter foods, or on its own.  It has a clean nose with aromas of red fruits, black tea, minerals and wet gravel.  It has flavors of red fruits, herbs, mineral, tobacco, slate, and white pepper.  MELIORA tastes like a late afternoon in an exotic land, rejuvenating at a small café after a day of exploring hidden alleys, air heavy with the smell of summer, cooled by an occasional breeze.

Wine Enthusiast – Editor’s Choice – 92 points – Counoise rarely sees varietal offerings from the state, but this one is a beauty.  Coming in at a gracefully low alcohol level, the aromas show purity, with fruit-forward notes of plum, berry, and herb, like fresh fruit on the stem. The flavors don’t show a touch of new oak, displaying the pretty, graceful, elegant profile of the vintage.  Coming in at an uncommonly low alcohol level for a red wine in the state, this is a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 26% Cinsault, 15% Counoise, 15% Syrah, and 4$ Grenache.  Red fruit, herb, plum, and white pepper aromas lead to pillowy soft, achingly pure fruit flavors.  There’s a pleasingly tart zing on the finish.  It’s flat-out delicious, showing lots of delicacy and nuance. – Sean P. Sullivan

Purple Cellars – 93 points – Savory nose of mushrooms, forest, stone, and red fruit.  Light body of cherries with savory herb, with round and bright acidity.  Nice mild white peppery finish.  Excellent drink on a summer day!

UBUNTU comes from a South African term that means “a quality that includes the essential  human virtues, compassion and humanity.” What is more essential to life than sharing it with others through compassion and humanity?   Why not begin by sharing this bottle with friends and family?

Pairs well with grilled, stewed, and braised meats like beef, veal, pork, chicken, and game.  Holds up well to hearty dishes like cassoulet.  Try with less spicy Asian dishes, Palella, and tapas.

2019 UBUNTU is 100% Grenache sourced from the Sugarloaf Vineyards within the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.

A medium bodied, dry red wine that pairs well with food (and wine).  A classic Grenache wine with a clean nose and aromas of eucalyptus and black tea.  Flavors of pepper, anise, with a slight vanilla finish.  Or, in the words of a high falutin consultant who helped me out a bit “charming and a style that is “cool” right now and perfect for a summer red.  This is a light bodied serious red wine.  We need more wines like this.”  Lets hope so.

Wine Enthusiast – Editor’s Choice – 92 points – The hallmark of this producer is laser-focused purity, and we see that here.  The aromas bring notes of dried herb, raspberry, leaf, and plum.  The palate has volume and weight, with a mesmerizing balance and purity.  It hangs on the finish.  Yum.  Best at 62 degrees. – Sean P. Sullivan

2020 UBUNTU is 100% Grenache sourced from the Sugarloaf Vineyard within the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.

A lighter bodied, dry red wine that pairs well with food (and wine).  A humdinger of a Grenache with a clean nose and aromas of graphite, black pepper, cherry, strawberry, leather, and licorice.  Flavors of raspberries and dried strawberries, grapefruit, fennel, prune, juniper, and rosemary, with wonderful “not too hard, not too soft” grenache tannins and mouthfeel..  Well balanced with up front fruit notes followed by a wash of acid for a balanced finish.  At bottling time, I was a bit flummoxed by the lighter color and considered blending with a bit of Syrah.  I am glad I chose not to because this is a very grenachy grenache and has beautiful flavors.

Sean P. Sullivan’s Northwest Wine Report – 90 points
Aromas of red hard candy, gummy, and herb lead to medium-bodied, lightly creamy-feeling red fruit flavors. It’s a very pretty offering of the variety with undeniable appeal.

Washington Wine Report  – 92 points – Coming from the Sugarloaf Vineyard, the 100% Grenache Ubuntu presents a light ruby and cranberry core with a golden rim in the glass. Resting for 22 months in neutral French oak, it gifts notes of fresh cranberry, rhubarb, lemony herbs, and sea breeze. Bitter herbs and red raspberry on the finish, it finishes smooth and spicy.

CUR NON comes from the Latin for why not?

Not everything needs to be logical or have a good reason.  Sometimes, why not is the essence of motivation and inspiration.  So, why not sit down, enjoy this wine, and reconnect with what inspires you?

2020 CUR NON is 100% Mourvedre sourced from the Sugarloaf Vineyard within the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.

The 2020 vintage is a classic Mourvedre in all of its edgy, funky, earthy glory.  It is a medium bodied, dry wine with smooth tannins, nice acidity and a lingering finish.  It has flavors of leather, sweet tobacco, roasted game meats, red and black fruit, earth, and just a hint of eucalyptus.

Sean P. Sullivan’s Northwest Wine Report – 88 points – Pale in color, the aromas are restrained, with notes of red fruit, fresh herb, and campfire. The palate is light and elegant, with smoky notes threaded throughout, getting stronger on the finish. The smoke unfortunately causes significant distraction on an otherwise lovely wine.

Washington Wine Report – 94 Points – This 100% Mourvedre from the Willow Run Vineyard is aged for 21 months in all neutral French oak. A light to medium brickish core with a blue-tinted rim in the glass, it sports notes of black raspberry, dried red currants, lemony herbs, ground white peppercorn, and a hint of rose flower. The most balanced of the 2020 Quiddity wines, it features sweet rounded tannins, perfect levels of mouthwatering acidity, and a lengthy fruit and spice-forward finish.

Purple Cellars – 95 points – Uncorked this totally awesome and curiously eccentric Quiddity 2020 Cur Non (Mourvedre).  Beautiful aromas of dark cherries, stewed plums, black tea with savory herb and touch of smoke. The palate is light, silky smooth improving vastly the next day, with fruitful juicy cherries, game and notes of coffee. Nice structure and finish with integrated tannins, pink peppercorn and hint of mint. A complex and original Mourvedre. Serve slightly chilled and decant well.

AMORE comes from the Latin phrase “AMORE et melle et felle es fecundissimus: which means “love is rich with honey and venom.

What is more essential to life than love?  First loves, true loves, first heartbreak, and soulmates.  Where would we be without them?  I hope you love this wine and take a minute to reflect on a love in your life.

Pairs well with robust flavors such as fattier cuts of beef and steaks like ribeye.  Also goes well with grilled meats and BBQ, mushrooms, roasted chicken, or charcuterie.  Also nicely compliments meals that have spices and herbs such as sage, rosemary, and red pepper.

A traditional Rhone style GSM blend (SMG actually, 62% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre, and 15% Grenache) sourced from the Elephant Mountain and Sugarloaf Vineyards within the Rattlesnake Hills AVA as well as the Willow Run Vineyard in the Columbia Valley AVA.

This is a classic Rhone Style blend.  A big, dry wine with elegant, round tannins and a nice mouth feel.  Flavors of licorice, pepper, dried strawberries as well as a bit of leather.  Great with food or a sipper by itself.

Wine Enthusiast – Editor’s Choice – 92 points (February/March 2021 Double Issue) – This inaugural release from the winery is a blend of 62% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre, and 15% Grenache.  Aromas of plums, cherry, and dried herb lead to a sumptuous, layered palate. – Sean P. Sullivan

Jeb Dunnuck – 93 points – Based on 62% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre, adn 15% Grenache, the 2018 AMORE comes from a handful of sites in the Columbia Valley and was aged 16 months in neutral oak.  Lots of gamey red and black fruits, peppery herb, and violet notes define the nose, and it’s medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, and lengthy.  I love its character, and it shows more game, smoke, tapenade, and meadiness with time in the glass.  Just a beautiful, character-filled wine.  it’s going to keep for a solid decade in cold cellars.

Similar to the 2018 vintage but even more.  It is a Rhone style GSM blend (SMG actually) with 63% Syrah, 21% Mourvedre, and 16% Grenache, sourced from the Elephant Mountain and Sugarloaf Vineyards within the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.

It is another wonderful, layered Rhone blend with flavors of red and purple fruit, dried herbs, black tea, and leather.  Also has a elegant mouthfeel that is like a nice hug for your tongue.

Sean P. Sullivan’s Northwest Wine Report – 91 points – Critic’s Choice – Syrah makes up 63% of this blend, with the rest Mourvèdre (21%) and Grenache. The aromas are quiet initially, with notes of barrel spice and cigar box, opening to reveal raspberry, blueberry, and herb. Full-feeling flavors follow, showing richness and levity. It’s tasty.

AUDENTES from the Latin phrase “Audentes fortuna iuvat” which means “fortune favors the bold.”

Studying abroad, living in Saudi Arabia, getting married, having children, and starting a winery have all been adventures that I have taken in my life which have profoundly influenced who I am.  Taking calculated risks is essential to a well lived life.  Why not pop the cork and plan your next adventure?

Pairs well with many heartier dishes including BBQ spareribs, braised beef, grilled meats, lamb, Osso Bucco, sausages, steaks and chops, and hamburgers  Goes nicely with game and mushroom dishes.

100% Syrah sourced from the Elephant Mountain vineyard within the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.

Our biggest wine.  This is a big, dry red wine that is still well mannered.  A full, round mouthfeel with medium tannins and aromas and flavors of red berries, red cherries, tobacco, and green peppercorns.

Per the Wine Enthusiast about our 2019 AUDENTES, “This new woodinville area winery is quickly making an impression.  The aromas are achingly pure, with notes of plum, blue fruit, and herb.  The focus on the palate is squarely on the fruit, with no overt oak influence in site.  It shows plenty of hang time on the finish.”

Our 2020 vintage is another Syrah which sings the praises of its fruit.  The palate is rich, textured, layered, and ripe.  Juicy black fruit, boysenberry, and black cherry.  Hints of eucalyptus, rosemary and herbs.  No pronounced oak influence and plenty of lingering flavors on the finish.

Sean P. Sullivan’s Northwest Wine Report – 93 – Critic’s Choice – Quiddity has had some of the most exciting inaugural releases in the state in recent years. This follow-up shows the winery is far from a one or two vintage wonder. The aromas are action-packed, with notes of blueberry, boysenberry, herb, and plum – a cornucopia of fruit. The palate explodes with piercingly pure blue and black fruit flavors. The finish sails off into the distance. It’s outrageously good and provides value in the extreme.

Washington Wine Report – 94 Points – 100% Syrah coming from Elephant Mountain Vineyard, the 2020 Audentes displays a dark cherry core with a neon purple rim. A stunning nose of dark cherry, powdered graphite, dried herbs, and dried lilacs pop from the glass. The palate brings additional components of bacon fat, black olives, boysenberry preserves, and a touch of allspice. Crunchy tannins, elevated acidity, and a full body complete the wine. It’s still young, and will be much better in 2024, then enjoy this wine over the next decade.

Purple Cellars – 96 points – Mushroomy, earth aromas. Bold red cherries with slight savory notes. Smooth body, with nice structured and integrated tannins. Hints of green notes or peppercorn on the finish.

SAPIT from the Latin phrase “nemo mortalium omnibus horis SAPIT” which means “of mortal men, none is wise at all times.”  As a well lived life includes taking risks and adventure, it also involves making mistakes, learning, adapting, and moving forward.  Why not enjoy this wine and reflect on some of your most epic failures and what you learned.

SAPIT is 100% Carmenere sourced from the Willow Run vineyard in Washington’s Columbia Valley.

Pairs nicely with smoked, grilled or roasted meats, chicken, pork, and veal.  Is a nice compliment to spicier dishes as well as strong and hard cheeses.

A medium bodied, dry red wine with a nose of green peppercorn, green chilis, and bramble.  It has a smooth and elegant mouth feel to match.  Whereas the 2019 SAPIT had an essence of green flavors such as Hatch Green chilis, the 2020 has those green flavors balanced by brown flavors, bramble and toasted cumin.  Boy howdy!

Sean P. Sullivan’s Northwest Wine Report – 91 points – Carménère can at times be a green and mean grape. This is not that. Aromas of black currant, brambleberry, bell pepper, and sunbaked herbs lead to well-balanced, plump dark fruit flavors. There’s a lot of polish, class, and purity. Fans of this variety take note.

Washington Wine Report – 91 Points – 100% Carmenere from the Willow Run Vineyard, the 2020 Sapit is aged for 21 months in neutral French oak barrels. Incredibly floral on the nose with fresh violets, macerated boysenberry, Blood orange zest, and dried thyme shining through. The palate has a black fruit and bitter herb aspect on the back palate on the finish.

CLUB ONLY WINES

KISMET “fate or destiny.”  Some of the best things in life happen when I least expect them (and am least prepared).  I have found the secret is to be open to what the universe is telling me and to capitalize on opportunities as they are presented to me…continue to “pull life’s thread” and see where it leads.  Have a darn fine wine and ponder what is your destiny?

TASTING NOTES NEEDED

ZHUZH – “To make more stylish, lively, or exciting, as by a small change or addition.”  Sometimes, a small change is all that is needed to make a big difference.  A new outfit to nail an interview, a squeeze of lemon or pat of butter to finish the sauce, or a special bottle of wine on a Tuesday night.  What are you waiting for?  Pop the cork and zhuzh up your day!

TASTING NOTES NEEDED

For the 2020 vintage, I pulled the two best barrels of Syrah and bottled them separately as a “reservy” Syrah, aka Block 14.  For something else new, I did not filter the wine prior to bottling.  The end result is a beautiful example of Washington Syrah.  I hope you agree.  AUDENTES – Block 14 is a big, dry red wine that is nicely textured with fine tannins.  Aromas and palate of boysenberry, allspice, smoked meat, and licorice.

AUDENTES – Block 14 is 95% Syrah with a 5% Viogner co-ferment sourced from the Elephant Mountain Vineyard (Syrah) and Sugarloaf Vineyard (Viogner) within Washington’s Rattlesnake Hills AVA.

Sean P. Sullivan’s Northwest Wine Report – 93 points – Critic’s Choice – The aromas erupt from the glass, with notes of fresh herb, black pepper, grape concentrate, and thistle. Focused, rich, pure dark fruit flavors follow. They linger on the spectacularly long finish. The purity is dazzling on an overall outrageously delicious wine.

Rizzle is “to relax after a heavy meal.”  For centuries, food and wine have brought people together.  Common ground to bridge a divide, a lubricant for a challenging conversation, or a way to enjoy the moment. Have a great meal then open a bottle and share with your people.

The logic behind making a port style wine is the same logic as behind the other wines, I like port so I thought I would give it a try.  The result is a ruby port style wine that is deep, rich, and luscious.  It has a nose of star anise, plum, fruit cake, and gingerbread and flavors of cherry, dates, fruit cake, plum, star anise, caramel, and toffee. It is a great finish to a meal with some stinky cheese, chocolate, or great on its own.

Rizzle is 100% Tinta Cao sourced from the Willow Run vineyard in Washington’s Columbia Valley.
